Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The eighth-ranked Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College basketball team fell to NCAA Division II Oakland City on Thursday night in Hamilton Arena. SMWC's 93-73 loss to the Lady Oaks moves the Pomeroys to 10-10 on the year. The Pomeroys finished the month of January with a 7-2 record that included seven straight wins with bookend defeats.
The Pomeroys were led by sophomore JaBreena Gardner's season-high 21 points. Fellow sophomores Mikayla Kinneer and NaShaunda Rayford each recorded 11 points. Junior Shelby Parmer dished out a game-high five assists, while Rayford and senior Alaura McKemie recorded a game-high five steals.
The Pomeroys got into trouble early, as the Lady Oaks took a 14-2 advantage with 15:35 on the clock. The Pomeroys refused to go away though and came within five points, 20-15, with 10:42 to play in the first half. Another Lady Oaks run put the Pomeroys down 10 before they would come back within six with 6:28 to play in the first. The Lady Oaks then put together yet another run to go into halftime up 43-33.
In the second half, the Pomeroys battled early and refused to go away, pulling themselves within two, 64-62, with 9:25 play. The Lady Oaks' offense took off again, however, and built a double-digit lead that the Pomeroys could not overcome. The Pomeroys trailed 80-68 with 5:52 to play. The Pomeroys were then the victim of a 13-5 run to fall 93-73.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on February 5, when they head to Wilberforce for a 7 p.m. start.
