Box Score OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team fell on Thursday night to Oakland City University, 117-99. The Pomeroys are now at 10-10 on the year as they enter the final month of the season.
Sophomore Tara Parmer, who shined the last time these two teams played, did so again. Parmer scored a career-high 28 points on a 10-of-14 shooting performance, six of which were three-pointers. Junior Ja'Breena Gardner also had a career night as she tied her career-high for assists with eight. She also led the team in steals and rebounds with five and seven, respectively, and put 17 points on the scoreboard. Senior Grace Ziegler was the third Pomeroy in double figures as she scored all 12 of her points from behind the arc.
The Pomeroys started off the first quarter in dominating fashion, outscoring the Lady Oaks 34-24 and making eight three-pointers. Parmer was a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point range in the first 10 minutes. Junior Na-Shaunda Rayford, Ziegler, Gardner and junior Mikayla Kinneer also all added points from beyond-the-arc. The second half saw OCU get the better of SMWC as the Lady Oaks outscored the Pomeroys, 36-15, to take a 60-49 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was owned by Parmer has she scored 12 of SMWC's 33 points on 5-of-6 shooting. SMWC edged out OCU 33-32 in the third frame to head to the final 10 minutes trailing by 10, 92-82. OCU won the final 10 minutes 25-17 and handed SMWC its 10th loss of the season.
The Pomeroys finished January with a 5-3 record and are currently ranked eighth in the USCAA Coaches' Poll. The Pomeroys have seven games left with the next one slated for February 3 in the Knoerle Center against Lindsey Wilson. Wednesday's game will be one of four remaining home games this season.
