Women's Basketball Downed by Rio Grande 74-96 in Third Straight Loss

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The SMWC Women's Basketball team (10-7, 4-6) faced stiff competition last night against the visiting University of Rio Grande (21-1, 9-0). The Red Storm currently sit at #18 in the NAIA and were too much to handle for the Pomeroys as they would fall 74-96. The loss is their third in a row and 4th in their past five as they continue a tough stretch of RSC opponents.
Game Summary

1st Half: The women started fast and battled to an 8-8 score midway through the first quarter. Rio Grande would go on a 12-0 run over the next two minutes to balloon their lead to 20-8. Some tough missed shots at the charity stripe and the Pomeroys would find themselves in an early hole 25-13 at the end of the 1st. SMWC would see mixed results in the 2nd quarter with missed layups on the offensive side. The Pomeroys would battle through but still find themselves down 44-25 at the half.
 
2nd Half: The Red Storm would continue to capitalize on miscues and use their strength in the paint to score easy layups. SMWC would try to chip away at the deficit, but Rio Grande would continue to hold on to their 20-point lead, finishing the 3rd up 72-46. The deficit would prove too much in the 4th as the Pomeroys would fall 74-96, putting up a strong fight against one of the best teams in the NAIA.
By the Numbers
  • Allyson Hardiek would lead the team with 14 points while adding 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. She was followed in scoring by Sydney Ingram (13) and Aliyah Williams (11).
  • Hardiek's 8 rebounds and Abby Worley's 6 assists would lead the team.
  • The team showed improvement at the free throw line, shooting 86.7% to Rio Grande's 81.5%. The Pomeroys also outshot the Red Storm from the 3-point line 46.2% to their 33.3%.
  • SMWC would shoot 32.8% on the night to Rio Grande's 44.9%.
