Dominant defensive effort leads SMWC past Fontbonne

Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will wait for Saturday night's outcome between Calumet College of St. Joseph and Bellarmine to celebrate a berth into the Midwest Sprint Football League championship playoff game.
But the Pomeroys did their part, defeating Fontbonne handily Saturday afternoon by a score of 27-7.
In what was likely SMWC's best defensive effort of the season, the Pomeroys did not allow the host Griffins to an offensive touchdown. The lone Fontbonne score came in the fourth quarter on a fumble by backup quarterback Kyle Vernelson that was recoverd by Avion Bass for a defensive touchdown.
The SMWC defense held Fontbonne to 99 total yards and picked off four passes. Monte' May had two interceptions, and Gavin Roddy and Trey Carter had one apiece.
Hunter Cardwell and Trey Jackson wreaked havoc on Fontbonne quarterback Chris Reckel. Each of the Pomeroys' defensive ends had 3.5 sacks and their pressure led to some of the interceptions.
"Everybody came out all week and worked hard, good intensity, good competition and it showed on the field," Cardwell said. "Trey works really hard. He and I have a great connection on the field."
Brennon Landry led a pair of second-quarter scoring drives for SMWC as the Pomeroys took control of the game. Landry hit a wide-open Carlos Munoz on an 8-yard scoring play early in the second quarter to cap a 12-play 86-yard drive with his 11th passing touchdown of the season.
Landry then finished off a 10-play, 78-yard drive with a two-yard TD run, his fourth of the season.
SMWC put together another 10-play drive in the third quarter with wide receiver Jaheem Joseph finishing it off with a two-yard run.
Joseph later caught a touchdown pass from backup QB Kyle Vernelson, who replaced Landry when the starter left with an aggravation of a knee injury.
The SMWC running game was solid as well. Patrick Perea had 20 rushes for 70 yards, but the Pomeroys got nice contributions from Kerry Lacey (8 rushes, 19 yards) and Tyler Vaughn (3 rushes, 34 yards) as well.
"We have a lot of faith in all those kids," coach Blaine Powell said. "When we needed a big run or a whatever we needed to do, we did today."
Vernelson was 5 for 7 for 71 yards in relief of Landry, who was 7 for 13 for 117 yards and a touchdown.
"Brennan did a good job. Very proud of Kyle coming in in a tough spot, comes in slinging it," Powell said. "Overall, I'm pleased with this team."
