SMWC Softball Sweeps IU-Southeast Behind Strong Pitching

Rocha, Ables, Ansari Combine for Six Runs

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – SMWC continued their season and River States Conference success by snatching 2 huge wins from IU-Southeast winning 11-4 and 4-2. The Pomeroys continue to show their speed and power on the base paths as they are currently leading the River States Conference in batting average as well as Stolen bases with 18 (the next closest is 6). SMWC is now 9-5 and 3-1 in RSC play and plans to continue their success heading into this upcoming weekend as they tackle WVU Tech and (RV) Rio Grande at home in two huge conference series.

Game 1: Gracie Ables (5 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) and Graycee Ansari (2 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 2 K) both got their time on the rubber and provided the team with 7 successful innings. With their pitching performance and a combination of 13 Pomeroy hits, SMWC racked in 11 runs with 7 individuals tallying hits (5 with multi-hit games). After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Woods responded well as they were determined to come out on top. The Pomeroys were led in Game 1 by Ashley Shanks (3-4, 1 double, 1 RBI) and Camryn Scott (2-4, 1 double, 1 run, 1 RBI, and 2 SB). Coach Walker was thrilled to take game 1 and grab a huge conference win but was eager to see how his team would respond for game 2.

Game 2:  Summer Rocha (5-2) received the ball again and her time on the rubber was exciting to watch. Rocha threw yet another complete game going the full 7 innings, allowing 1 earned run, on 4 hits while walking 2. The Pomeroy bats continued to stay alive as they roped in 7 more hits and brought in 4 runs. Scott continued to stay hot as she was 2-2 with 1 walk, 1 run, 1 RBI and 3 SB.

Quote | Head Coach Jim Walker
On the team's effort…
"Today was a great team effort—the energy that the team had in the dugout really set the tone for the day and gave the support the team needed when we got in tense situations."

Quote | Camryn Scott
On both her and the team's performance…
"I think the games went really well and we finally came out strong in the first game from the first pitch and kept it going. As far as my performance goes, I am just trying to do whatever needs to get done in the moment to help the team get the job done."

Next Up
