OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok. – The SMWC Softball team (2-2) wrapped up day one of the Red Dirt Classic, splitting the day against the University of Arts and Science - Oklahoma (USA) and Mid-America Christian University (MACU). The team faced some top-tier NAIA competition including a close game against the currently #3 ranked USA.
How It Happened
The Pomeroys went 1-1 on the day, dropping game one 1-0 to #3 USA. The Pomeroys battle behind good pitching from FR
Gracie Ables (6 innings 1 run 5 hits 3BB). Unfortunately, SMWC could not come up with a clutch hit to plate a run. The Poms had runners in scoring position every other inning. Coach Walker said, "The girls battled hard, and I think they realized we can compete with anyone in the entire country."
Game 2 saw the Pomeroy bats come alive to post a 4 run win over MACU, with performances by
Josie Lord (3-4 1 RBI),
Ashley Shanks (2-2, 1 run, 1 RBI) and
Jaselyn Conn (2-3, 1 run). The Pomeroys also got another solid pitching effort with
Summer Rocha and
Graycee Ansari combining to pitch a 4 hitter.
Summer Rocha, "My team makes being a pitcher significantly easier. Today we found rhythm in the box and on defense that's going to make us really hard to beat."
