Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' offensive performance in Week 1 of the program's first sprint football team included 524 total yards and 26 first downs with quarterbacks
Brennon Landry (New Iberia, La./Westgate) and backup
Brian Marrell (Amarillo, Texas/Bushland H.S.) each playing solid football.
Landry left that 34-28, overtime win during the second half with a banged up knee, but he expects to return Saturday vs. Quincy in the historic home opener.
Just as important as the quarterback leadership will be the leadership on the defensive side of the ball. Safety Monte May (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) is coming off an eight-tackle performance in which he also intercepted a pass.
The co-captain will be key to SMWC building off its strong second-half defensive performance.
"In the defensive backfield, it all starts with Monte May," SMWC coach
Blaine Powell said. "He's kind of our quarterback on the field for the defense as far as getting us in the right defenses against the formations we'll face. That's big this weekend. Quincy does throw a lot of formations at you. We've got to make sure we're in the right sets."
The Hawks are led by Taylor Klusmeyer, who rushed for 73 yards on 21 carries and was 13 for 28 for 93 yards and three interceptions in their opener.
"Offensively, they've got a good running game with their quarterback. Their running backs are talented as well. They'll definitely be a strong opponent, just like everyone," Powell said.
It will be difficult for the Pomeroys to match the dramatic first game in school history that included a climb back from 20 points capped by a touchdown catch by Carlos Munoz with 21 seconds to go, a tying 2-point conversion by
Patrick Perea (Amarillo, Texas) and a game-winning TD catch in overtime by
Andrece Miller (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South).
Quincy is coming off a 7-0 win against Fontbonne.
"They're definitely very aggressive defensively, especially with their front seven. They just play coverage with their back four. Their front seven is what stood about with their defense,"
SMWC coach
Blaine Powell said.
Patrick Perea was a catalyst for the offense in Week 1, totaling over 200 yards from scrimmage, and Miller (8 receptions, 59 yards, TD) and Munoz (6 receptions, 70 yards, TD) figure to be key weapons again for Landry along with
Corey Miller (2 catches, 24 yards, TD).
"I do feel good about where we're at on both sides of the ball," Powell said. "Offensively, we picked up on everything. We were really sharp with our execution. Being lined up right away, being able to move guys, motion guys, we were crisp in those aspects. It's good going into this week, being able to build on what we've already done instead of having to go back and review. That's a big thing at this point in the season."
