Stout defensive effort lifts Pomeroys in home opener

| By:
Box Score Saint Mary-of-the-Woods allowed Quincy to score on the opening drive Saturday in its home opener in Midwest Sprint Football League action at Jay Barrett Field.
But the Pomeroys' defense rose to the occasion for the second straight week, shutting out the visiting Hawks the remainder of the game.
Hunter Cardwell had three sacks and forced a fumble that Gavin Roddy scooped up and scored for one of the Pomeroys' three first-half touchdowns on their way to a 21-7 victory.
SMWC got solid play in all three phases of the game.
Quarterback Brennon Landry threw touchdown passes to Patrick Perea and Jaheem Joseph to lead the offense.
On special teams, Justin White's punt to the one-yard line helped set up the defensive TD for SMWC, Zander Wilbur blocked a Quincy punt and Drake Varns went 3 for 3 on extra points.
"I'm proud of everybody," said coach Blaine Powell. "Hunter stepped up big on third and fourth downs. He's a heck of a player."
Cardwell, who had 2.5 sacks in the Week 1 win, was happy to help lead his team to the victory.
"It felt good. [Defensive line] Coach Griffin [Olson], all the defensive coaches give us a good gameplay. Coach Powell works us hard so when we come out here on game days, it's easy. It's all to the coaches and to our team, we play as a team."
Co-captain Monte May had six total tackles.
"It felt good watching other players get their shine; scoring on defense is always a good time," May said, referring to his defensive backfield teammate finding the end zone. "The key to our defense was stop the run and make them throw it. We bring the energy and finish the game."
SMWC returns to action next Saturday against Midway for an Oct. 1 Homecoming game at 4 p.m.
