SMWC came up short in a back-and-forth men's basketball battle at Judson University on Friday night as Javaris Wiggins made a 5-foot jumper with three seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 77-75 win.
The Pomeroys had momentum in the final minutes.
SMWC climbed out of a 60-46 deficit with a 13-2 run that pulled the Pomeroys within 62-59 on a
Tarik Dixon 3-pointer with 8:17 to go. Dixon connected again with 4:03 left to put the Pomeroys ahead, 69-66, for the first time since the 17-minute mark of the second half.
The Pomeroys didn't relinquish the lead again until Wiggins' game-winner.
Greg Jenkins' jumper with 1:43 left broke a 73-73 tie, but Judson was able to answer on the ensuing possession to tie it at 75-75.
Barnes picked up a steal with 33 seconds left, and the Pomeroys set up on offense.
Chaz Birchfield hit Barnes on a backdoor cut. Barnes was bodied at the rim but his attempt didn't fall. Judson took possession with 10.7 seconds left to set up the winning shot.
SMWC took a 34-31 lead into halftime, but host Judson went on an 11-2 run to take a 53-44 lead with 14:16 to go.
The Pomeroys struggled from 3-point range, shooting 2 for 20 from beyond the arc.
Judson shot 59 percent overall from the field and 61 percent (8 for 13) from 3-point range.
Barnes led the Pomeroys with 24 points and three steals. Jenkins had 16 points, six assists and four steals. Birchfield added 10 points and dix boards.
SMWC returns to action Saturday at Trinity Christian.
