On target: Pomeroys set school record with 60.9 percent shooting in 94-55 win

SMWC shot 60.9 percent from the field for a new school record and picked up a dominant nonconference men's basketball victory Monday night, cruising past Trinity Christian for a 94-55 victory inside Hamilton Arena.
Senior Cobie Barnes poured in 29 points on 13-of-17 shooting, and Chaz Birchfield stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Greg Jenkins and Greg Johnson tied for a team-high five assists apiece, adding 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Pomeroys built a 20-6 lead just six minutes into the action when Johnson connected on a 3-pointer. The Pomeroys lead grew to 31-13 after a 3-pointer by Tarik Dixon and a layup by Birchfield at the 9:01 mark. A steal and dunk by Birchfield helped the lead grow to 20 at 33-13.
SMWC went into halftime with a 48-26 lead, knocking down 5 of 11 from 3-point range and 67.7 percent overall.
SMWC (8-4) plays host to East-West University on Friday at 6 p.m.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • With 345 points through 12 games, Barnes is already third on SMWC's career scoring leaderboard behind Tarik Dixon (397) and Elkin Ramirez (600). He's just 12 shy of becoming the single-season leader by passing Ramirez (356). 
  • Barnes' 13 made field goals tied Ramirez for the second-best single-game performance, one shy of Jadyn McHugh's 14 on Feb. 5, 2021. 
  • The Pomeroys' 22 assists were the second most this season for SMWC. 
  • Jenkins had two steals on Monday night and his 2.7 steals per game ranks 12th in NAIA. 
  • The Pomeroys hauled in 48 rebounds, with Shon Tupuola leading the way with 12. He's 8th in NAIA at 10.8 per game.
