Pomeroys Earn Shut Out Victory Over Oakland City For Homecoming 2024 Victory

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Sprint Football team made the most of playing in front of a school record crowd of 1,215 fans at Jay Barrett Field by earning a 37-0 Homecoming victory over the visiting Oakland City Might Oaks on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5).

The Pomeroys remained undefeated and improved to 3-0 on the season while Oakland City fell to 1-2.

Devron Johnson opened the scoring with 11:16 to go in the first quarter when he caught a 10-yard scoring strike from Jeremiah Tosky to cap a 4-play, 23-yard drive for the quick 7-0 advantage. The cushion would grow to 14 points in the second quarter when Tosky made the most of a busted play to scamper six yards down the sideline and into the endzone with 7:46 remaining in the second stanza for the 14-0 lead.

The defense would get on the board for the Pomeroys with 7:04 left before the half when a misplayed kickoff by the Mighty Oaks pinned them at their own 4-yard line. SMWC caught the visiting quarterback in his own end zone for the safety and stretch the lead out to 16-0.

Johnson would reach the end zone for the second time in the contest when he hauled in a 14-yard pass from Tosky with 3:38 remaining before halftime to cap a nine-play, 40-yard drive to make it 23-0. Hazzard scampered down the sideline for a 59-yard rushing touchdown with 23 seconds remaining before the break to send the Pomeroys into the locker room with a 30-0 advantage.

The only scoring in the second half belonged to Claijuan Cash who caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Carter Hall to give SMWC a 37-0 lead.

Tosky finished the game by connecting on 11-of-29 passes for 95 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game. Derron Hazzard rushed the ball 13 times for 106 yards and the 59-yard TD scamper.

Devron Johnson paced the team with six catches for 69 yards and a pair of scores while Cash had the 23-yard scoring reception.

Vermont Johnson, Jr., was the Pomeroys leading tackler with seven stops in the contest. Brandon Washington tied for the team-high in tackles with seven stops as well. Jesse Lara forced and recovered a Mighty Oaks fumble. The Pomeroy defense was credited with 12 tackles for a loss in the game led by Lara's 3.5 tackles for a loss. Gary Settle and Peyton Metzger combined for a quarterback sack which resulted in the SMWC safety late in the second quarter.

SMWC amassed 221 yards on the ground on 42 rushing attempts and added 118 in the air for the victory.

It marked the first shut out for the Pomeroys since they faced Oakland City last season in a 59-0 victory. SMWC improved to 2-1 all-time in Homecoming contests with the victory.

The Pomeroys will travel to Bellarmine on Saturday, October 12 for a key Midwest Sprint Football League matchup in Louisville, Ky. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. (ET) against the Knights.
