SMWC Advances To RSC Semifinals With Sweep Over Shawnee State

Pomeroys Will Travel To #11 IU-Kokomo on Friday at 7 pm (ET)

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team swept visiting Shawnee State (Ohio) on Tuesday (Nov. 12) inside the Knoerle Center in the quarterfinals of the 2024 River States Conference Tournament. Set scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-17.

The Pomeroys improved to 32-6 on the year while Shawnee sees their season end with a 16-13 ledger. SMWC is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will move on to face off against No. 1 seed (and No. 11 nationally-ranked) IU-Kokomo on Friday, November 15 at 7 pm (ET). The semifinals and finals of the tournament will be held in Kokomo, Ind.

Masa Pesic led the way for the Pomeroys with 10 kills on 20 attacks with no errors for a sparkling attack percentage of .500. Karla Melendez posted eight kills while Lisanel Rodriguez tallied six. Alexis Keoho posted 18 set assists in the match while Aden Britt tallied 14.

SMWC owned eight service aces in the match with a team-leading three coming from Britt. Leishmarie Virella added a apir of service aces as did Audrey Lee.

Defensively, Jocelyn Chavez added to her all-time SMWC record in digs with 18 more. The Pomeroys had 10 total blocks in the contest, paced by four from Isabel Hansen. Hansen now has 45 block solos on the season which is tied for the SMWC all-time record.

The Pomeroys led by just a point midway through the opening set before consecutive kills from Rodriguez, Pesic and Britt established an 18-14 advantage. Alondra Garcia Alicea added a service ace to make it 19-14. A kill from Madison Hill gave SMWC a 25-19 first set win.

Shawnee State led 10-7 in the second set, but the Pomeroys countered with a 7-0 run to take the lead by the score of 14-10 a Virella service ace. SMWC would score four of their final five points in the set for the 25-17 win.

In the third set, the Pomeroys took a 13-6 lead early and finished the victory off with Pesic's 10th kill.
