SMWC Women's Basketball Battles To Buzzer Against UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team entered their sixth game of the year undefeated and it was a stiff road test against NCAA Division II foe University of Indianapolis as the Pomeroys gave them all they wanted on their home court before falling 68-60.

SMWC fell to 5-1 on the season while UIndy improved to 1-3.

Madison Fueger led the way with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Brooklynn Jones tallied 15 points and five rebounds while hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field. Samara Douglas continued her strong start to the season with a seven-point and five-rebound performance.

The Pomeroys connected on seven 3-pointers in the contest as Fueger led the way with a trio of triples while Abby Worley posted a pair from distance.

UIndy had to have a conventional 3-point play at the end of the first quarter to knot the contest at 17. Jones and Fueger hit jumpers as the clock ticked towards the eight minute mark of the first half to stake the Pomeroys to a 21-17 advantage. With 7:17 on the clock, Jones drilled a 3-pointer and SMWC led 24-19 -- its largest lead of the game. Jones would score on a driving lay-up with 21 seconds left before the half to send SMWC into the break with a 32-31 lead.

SWMC got a jumper from Douglas just 13 seconds into the third quarter to take a 34-31 lead. UIndy would score the next 12 points to stretch their lead before Worley connected on a 3-pointer with 4:51 remaining to stop the run and get the Pomeroys within 43-37. SMWC would cut further into the deficit with a conventional 3-point play by Destiny Thomas but UIndy was able to counter with a bucket. Aubrey Burgess ended the third quarter with a steal and jumper as UIndy led 49-46 with 10 minutes remaining.

Fueger answered an early UIndy fourth quarter run with a 3-pointer at the 6:51 mark to get the Pomeroys within a possession. She would drain another 3-pointer as the clock ticked under the four minute mark to make it 61-58 but UIndy countered with a game-deciding 7-0 which Douglas ended with a jumper with 17 seconds remaining. UIndy would win the contest 68-60.

The Pomeroys will travel to Rio Grande, Ohio for a pair of contests this weekend beginning on Friday, November 22 when they face off against Lindsay Wilson College at 2 pm (ET). On Saturday, November 23, SMWC will face off against Governors State at 1 pm (ET).
