GARY, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team dropped a close decision on the road to IU-Northwest on the final day of the Redhawk Classic by the score of 76-70.
The Pomeroys fell to 0-2 on the young season while IU-Northwest improved to 2-0. SMWC will travel to the Mount Vernon Nazarene Homecoming Classic on Nov. 8-9 and they will take on Aquinas (Mich.) on Friday followed by host Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday. Both contests will begin at 3 pm (ET).
Jared Bonds led the way for SMWC with a 17 point performance as he hit 7-of-11 shots from the field. He was joined in double figures scoring by
Greg Jenkins who tallied 15 points and 7 rebounds while Caleb Ihewuku posted 10 points and seven boards.
Taeron Hogg also recorded seven rebounds for the Pomeroys in the contest.
The Pomeroys would score the first six points of the contest and stretched their lead out to 10-3 on a jumper by Iheukwu just over four minutes into the game. A jumper by Hogg with 10:18 to go before the half stretched the cushion out to 22-12. A trio of late free throws from IU-Northwest sent the two teams into the locker room tied at 32.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the early going of the second half including a jumper by Jenkins with 17:21 remaining which knotted the game at 38. After Hogg tied it at 44, IU-Northwest would score 10 of the next 12 points to take an eight point lead. A lay-up by Jenkins with 7:44 remaining trimmed the IU-Northwest lead down to just 57-54 but they scored the game's next six points to stretch the deficit back out.
SMWC would get within four points in the waning moments of the contest before IU-Northwest scored late for the 76-70 victory.
