RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball fell to Governors State by the score of 92-75 on the final day of the Bevo Francis Classic hosted by Rio Grande (Ohio).
The Pomeroys fell to 6-2 on the season while Governors State improved to 5-1. SMWC will open the River States Conference portion of the schedule on Tuesday, November 26 when they travel to Brescia (Ky.). Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm (CT).
Madison Fueger led the way with 17 points on a 6-of-13 effort from the field while
Brooklynn Jones added 14 points and hit 7-of-11 shots.
Destiny Thomas added 10 points in the contest.
Thomas led the way with five rebounds while Fueger,
Samara Douglas and
Diamond Bryant each added four. Fueger tallied a block and three steals.
SMWC hit 27-of-61 shots from the field (45.45 percent) and connected on four 3-pointers.
Malaya Woullard was a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range in the game. The Pomeroys were 17-of-21 from the charity stripe.
The Pomeroys would lead early and hit a pair of free throws from
Aubrey Burgess with 35 seconds left in the first quarter as they trailed 18-17. A lay-up from Iyre Gomez leveled the score at 19 early in the second quarter and jumper from Jones mid-way through the stanza to stake the Pomeroys to a 25-24 advantage. Governors State would lead 37-33 at the break.
Jones would score early in the third quarter but a 14-0 Governor State run opened up a 53-35 lead. Woullard would connect on a jumper in the waning second as the Pomeroys fell 92-75.Â
