The SMWC men's volleyball team was unable to make it a perfect 3-0 weekend, but a 2-1 weekend and a 7-2 overall record on Feb. 17 is a promising start for the Pomeroys.
After a five-set win Friday vs. Goshen, the Pomeroys came back and swept the Maple Leafs on Saturday in Wolverin Hoosier Athletic Conference play before a 3-1 loss to Brescia in nonconference play.
A look at Saturday's action:
SMWC vs. Goshen
The Pomeroys had just nine total attack errors to post a .301 hitting percentage as the team put together a diverse attack to win 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.
Bentley Meyer led the way with nine kills, followed by
Marko Zolnjan with eight and
Joseph Szadorski with seven.
Jacob Wisniewski (16 assists) and
Connor Orrock (15 assists) spread the ball around well, as
Christian Green and
Yammiel Martinez added four kills apiece.
Jalen Noveda paced the back row with 12 digs. Szadorski and Meyer led the defense at the net with five and four blocks respectively.
SMWC vs. Brescia
Coming off two big WHAC wins, the Pomeroys were unable to pull through in a thrilling opening set that went back and forth.
Manase Fetulimoeata and Zolnjan had kills that kept the match even up to 28 points before Brescia took the opening set 30-28.
The Pomeroys bounced right back to take the second set 25-22, but the Bearcats were able to take the next two 25-17, 25-23.
Zolnjan had a career-best 18 kills and
Bentley Meyer added 16 and Fetulimoeata nine.
Wisniewski had 22 assists. Noveda led the back row again with 13 digs.
