WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. -- Williams Baptist relied on timely hitting in the opener and held off a Saint Mary-of-the-Woods rally in the nightcap to earn a 7-6 and 6-4 softball doubleheader sweep over the Pomeroys on Saturday. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods returns to action on Sunday at Lyon College in another doubleheader in Arkansas.
GAME ONE
The slugfest featured Saint Mary-of-the-Woods scoring three times in the first, Williams Baptist claiming a 5-4 lead after two innings, then the Pomeroys leading 6-5 after three innings. Williams Baptist scored the final two runs in the fifth to claim a 7-6 victory.
Jasmine Kinzer led the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods offense with a home run among two hits with two RBIs.
Abbi Henderson also had a multi-hit game with two singles and one run scored.
Other key offensive contributors included
Ruby Gray reaching base three times with a double and two runs scored, and
Jaleigh Crawford with a single and two RBIs.
Emily Fitzwater led the pitching effort with five strikeouts and four hits allowed in five innings of work. Madyson Shoebottom led the Williams Baptist offense with three hits, including a home run and a double, with four RBIs.
The Pomeroys threatened to tie the game in the final inning after Gray worked a walk, but Williams Baptist turned a double play to secure the win.
GAME TWO
Williams Baptist jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Saint Mary-of-the-Woods rallied with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to close the final margin to 6-4.
Jaselyn Conn and
Lyric Krause led the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods offense with two hits each, including a double. Conn scored twice with one RBI, and Krause also drew one walk and had one RBI.
Other key offensive contributors for SMWC included Henderson with a single and one run scored; Kinzer with a single, RBI and a stolen base; and Justyce Rohrabaigh with a single, run scored and one stolen base.
Kennedy Johnson led the Williams Baptist offense with a 3-run home run.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods threatened in the final inning, closing to within 6-4 on a single by Kinzer. Williams Baptist ended the game throwing Kinzer out trying to reach scoring position as the tying run to cap the victory.
