The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's basketball team held off a fourth-quarter rally by IU East on Thursday, picking up a 73-68 victory.
The Pomeroys improved to 14-9 overall and 9-4 in the River States Conference to set a school record with their ninth RSC win.
Irye Gomez had eight of the team's 22 points in the first quarter as SWMC grabbed a 22-13 lead. IU East rallied in the second quarter, however. The Red Wolves pulled within 28-27 with 3:38 to go in the first half, but freshman
Talyssa Moody buried a 3-pointer for a 31-27 lead for SMWC.
The Pomeroys finished the first half on a 7-0 run. Gomez connected for a 3-pointer and
Destiny Thomas and
Madison Fueger scrored to put the Pomeroys ahead 38-29.
The Pomeroys made it eight more unanswered points to start the second half as
Brooklynn Jones scored six in the first two minutes to put SMWC ahead 46-29.
With the Red Wolves making a run in the fourth quarter to pull within 57-49 with 6:20 to go, Moody came up with another big 3-pointer.
Brooklynn Jones led the way for SMWC with 20 points and six assissts.
Madison Fueger added 16 points, three steals and two blocked shots.
Irye Gomez chipped in 15 points.
Allyson Hardiek had a team-high nine rebounds, chipping in two steals and a blocked shots.
