SMWC Softball Earns Sweep Of UHSP

ST. LOUIS – The St. Mary-of-the-Woods softball team continued their busy stretch of games by sweeping a pair of contests on Tuesday (March 12) on the road against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis by the scores of 10-1 and 7-6.

The Woods are now 6-8 on the young season while UHSP fell to 5-6.

SMWC took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the first game as Nevaeh Pender stole third base and then scored on an error before Emily Fitzwater signled home Lyric Krause and Jaselyn Conn. UHSP got a run back in the second inning before The Woods broke the game opener in the top of the seventh frame. Makayla Jackman tripled to drive in Jazmine Kinzer to begin the scoring. Jackman then scored off a Katrina Straw RBI before Abbi Henderson and Justyce Rohrabaugh each scored as Pender reached on an error. Pender would go on to score off a wild pitch. Krause singled to score Conn and Crawford doubled to score Krause for the 10-1 victory.

In the circle, Fitzwater picked up her first victory of the year as she went the distance all seven innings allowing just three hits and one run while striking out seven.
In the second game, Henderson recorded a two RBI single to score Emily Singleton and Hannah Boardman for the 2-0 advantage in the top of the second inning. UHSP knotted the contest at 2 in the top of the second on a two-run triple. In the third inning, the Pomeroys regained the lead as Krause recorded a RBI single to score Crawford before Boardman unloaded with a three run home run which scored herself, Jackman and Krause and The Woods led 6-2. UHSP would crawl back into the contest and knotted the game at 6 heading to the seventh inning. Fitzwater continued her strong day at the plate and in the circle with a double to score Pender for the 7-6 lead.

The Woods Lana Martinez allowed a lead off single but got the next three outs as SMWC earned the victory and the sweep.
