SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Once again on Saturday afternoon inside the Knoerle Center, the St. Mary-of-the-Woods men's volleyball team battled tough with the No. 13 nationally-ranked Lourdes Gray Wolves but in the end it was Lourdes that left with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18. 25-20) victory.
The Pomeroys dropped to 13-12, 2-10 WHAC while the Gray Wolves improved to 11-7, 11-1 WHAC.
For the second consecutive match,
Marko Zolnjan paced the team with 15 kills while
Andrej Lindner and
Joey Anderson recorded five each.
Brayden Baxter finished with three service aces while
Yammiel Martinez had four blocks while Lindner and Anderson added one each.
Ethan Martins had 31 assists while
Brycen Yadao tallied eight digs.
The Woods tallied five aces in the game and six blocks and enjoyed their highest attack percentage with a .290 mark in the second set.
In the first set, Zolnjan recorded his first kill of match to get The Woods within 4-2. After three in a row from the Gray Wolves, back-to-back kills from
Joseph Szadorski and Zolnjan made it 7-5. Another 3-0 run later in the set knotted the score at 10 capped by block assists from Lindner and Martinez. A service ace from Lindner capped another 3-0 run to push the Pomeroys ahead 13-11. Lourdes went on a 5-0 run and took the opening set 25-21.
A block from Martinez would stake the Pomeroys to a 1-0 advantage in the second set before another kill by Zolnjan stakes SMWC to a 2-1 cushion. A Zolnjan kill late in the set kept the Pomeroys in it but the Gray Wolves scored the final two points for the 25-18 win.
In the third set, The Woods went on a 5-0 run to erase a deficit and was capped by a Baxter service ace for the 10-6 lead. Two points in a row from The Woods capped by a Zolnjan kill knotted the score at 16. Tristan Michel recorded a late kill, but Lourdes finished the match off with a 25-20 victory on a kill from Reshawn Allen.
The Pomeroys are back in action when they travel to Midway (Ky.) on Tuesday, March 26 at 6 p.m. (ET) on the road.
