MIDWAY, Ky. – Visiting St. Mary-of-the-Woods survived a close battle in the second set to preserve a sweep of Midway (Ky.) on Tuesday evening. SMWC took the match 3-0 (25-12, 27-25, 25-18).
The Pomeroys improved to 14-12 while Midway fell to 2-16.
Marko Zolnjan led the way with 13 kills with a pair of service aces while
Christian Green tallied 10 kills.
Manase Fetulimoeata also added a pair of key service aces in the second set.
Ethan Martins tallied 33 assists while
Brycen Yadao added 11 digs.
Tied at 5, the Pomeroys scored the next three in a row capped by block assists from
Ethan Martins,
Joseph Szadorski and
Marko Zolnjan for the 9-6 lead. They would surrender a point before rattling off three more in a row with a kill from
Bentley Meyer for the 12-7 advantage. An errant Midway attack staked the Pomeroys to a 17-9 lead and they finished off the 25-12 set winner with a service ace from Zolnjan.
Christian Green got The Woods off a strong start in the second set with a kill as they raced out to a 7-3 advantage on a Zolnjan service ace. A Green kill gave The Woods an 11-10 lead, but Midway would score the next four in a row before Zolnjan stopped the run with a kill and drew SMWC within 14-12. SMWC draw within a point at 18-17 on block assists by
Yammiel Martinez and Meyer to make it 18-17.
Another kill from Meyer capped a short run to knot the score at 20. Midway would get to the brink of winning the set, but the Woods countered with two points to tie the score at 24. After falling behind by a point,
Christian Green knotted the set at 25 and then
Manase Fetulimoeata posted a service ace to set up set point. Zolnjan recorded a kill to close out the set a 27-25 come-from-behind victory in set two.
In the third set, Green recorded a kill to stake the Pomeroys to a 15-9 lead after The Woods pulled away with a pair of 4-0 runs earlier. After Midway had an errant attack to push the Pomeroys lead out to 16-9 they called a timeout. A kill from Szadorski gave the Woods a 22-13 lead, but Midway responded with four points in a row until a service error stopped their momentum. An attack error gave the Woods a 24-17 lead to set up set point. After Midway grabbed a point, a Midway attack landed out of bounds and the Woods won the set, 25-18.
The Pomeroys are back in action when they travel to Lawrence Tech (Mich.) on Friday March 29 & Saturday March 30. First serve on Friday is set for 7 pm (ET) while the action begins at 3 pm (ET) on Saturday.
