PITTSBURGH – The St. Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team began a week conference road swing by splitting a pair of contests on Friday afternoon (March 29) at Point Park (Pa.) While Point Park took the opening contest by the score of 4-2, the Pomeroys came back to win the nightcap with a 9-3 victory.
SMWC's record moved to 17-11 (10-4 RSC) on the season while Point Park is now 11-13 (5-9 RSC).
In the day's second game, Point Park got off to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first until
Jaselyn Conn homered to center field in the fourth to knot the contest at 1.
Annika Hannigan would single to center field which drove in
Jasmine Kinzer in the top of the fifth inning to give SMWC a 2-1 lead.
Hannah Boardman then came up with a two RBI single center to score Pender and Hannigan and the lead swelled to 4-1.
In the fifth inning the double steal was on with Pender stealing second while Kinzer raced off for the 5-1 lead. Point Park got two back in the bottom of the frame as the Pomeroys led 5-3.
Conn ripped a double to center field in the top of the seventh inning to score
Abbi Henderson for the 6-3 advantage. The Woods led 7-3 when Kinzer connected on a sacrifice fly to score
Makayla Jackman. The Pomeroys poured it on with Hannigan recording a two RBi single to center field to score Broughton and Conn for the 9-3 advantage. All told, SMWC scored four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning.
Conn finished the contest 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Hannigan was 2-of-4 at the dish with three RBI and a run scored.
Summa Rocha earned the victory with 5.2 innings pitched striking out five and allowing just four hits.
Emily Fitzwater went the rest of the way to hold onto the lead.
The day began with Point Park scoring three times in the bottom of the second inning to go ahead 3-0. A
Jasmine Kinzer home run in the top of the fourth inning to center field got the Pomeroys back in the contest at 3-1. She would strike again in the top of the sixth inning with a single to center field which scored
Abby Broughton to make it 3-2. But Point Park tacked on a run in the bottom half of the frame to make to win the opener 4-2.
Naveah Pender went 2-of-4 at the plate as did
Lyric Krause. Kinzer was 2-of-3 at the dish with two RBi and a run scored. Catcher
Ruby Gray was 2-of-2 batting in the contest. Both Kinzer and Gray recorded stolen bases.
Marin Jacobs dropped to 6-4 on the year as she allowed nine hits and four runs over six innings pitched with five strikeouts.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods returns to action on Saturday, March 30 when they travel to Ohio Christian for a pair of River States Conference games beginning at 1 pm (ET).
