Clutch Hitting Leads To Softball Road Sweep Of Brescia (Ky.)

OWENSBORO, Ky.  – Ruby Gray came up the clutch hit late in the first game and a five-run explosion in the nightcap lead St. Mary-of-the-Woods to a River States Conference doubleheader sweep of Brescia (Ky.) on the road Tuesday afternoon. SMWC won the first contest 3-2 while they came back to win 10-4 in the late game.

SMWC improved to 31-13 (24-6 RSC) while Brescia fell to 11-28 (9-21 RSC). The Pomeroys are now on a six game winning streak heading into the regular season finale doubleheader on Thursday at Oakland City.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, Annika Hannigan doubled to left center to drive in Jaliegh Crawford in the fifth to knot the score at 1. Gray would reach on a fielding error which allowed Hannigan to score for the 2-1 lead. Brescia answered with a run in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the score at 2. Gray worked her magic with a single to left field in the top of the seventh inning to score Crawford for the 3-2 victory.

Crawford was 2-of-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored with Hannigan scored a run and drove in another. Marin Jacobs started the game and went four innings in the circle, allowing four hits and one run, but Emily Fitzwater moved to 7-2 on the year by allowing three hits over the final three innings allowing just an unearned run and striking out one.

Brescia took a a 1-0 lead in the second game in the first inning, before SMWC scored twice in the third. Lyric Krause singled up the middle to score Abbi Henderson and then Jaselyn Conn singled up the middle to score Jasmine Kinzer for the 2-1 lead. Brescia would knot the score at 2 in the bottom half of the third inning to set up a big fourth inning for the Pomeroys.

Hannigan singled to right center to score Abby Broughton to put the Pomeroys back in the lead before Henderson singled to left field to score Hannigan for the 4-2 advantage. When Conn reached on an error by the centerfielder, Henderson, Naveah Pender and K. Strow all came around to score to stretch the lead out to 7-2. In the sixth inning, Makayla Jackman doubled to right center to score Conn and Kinzer for the 9-2 lead. The Pomeroys tacked on another in the seventh when Pender recorded a sacrifice fly to score Justyce Rohrabaugh for the 10-2 lead. Brescia scored twice in the bottom of the seventh as the Pomeroys took the 10-4 victory.

Henderson finished the game with a 3-of-5 showing at the dish with two runs scored and a RBI while Annika Hannigan was 3-of-4 with a run scored and a run driven in. Katrina Strow was also 3-of-4 at the plate with a run scored.

Summer Rocha went the full seven innings in the circle, allowing eight hits with four runs allowed and four strike outs to earn the victory.

The Pomeroys travel to Oakland City on Thursday, April 25 for a doubleheader beginning at 4 pm (ET) as they continue to gear up for the River States Conference Tournament next weekend.
