ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Lyric Krause notched a walk off double in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Pomeroys took the second game to sweep visiting Rio Grande (Ohio) by the scores of 4-3 in eight innings and 6-4 in the nightcap.
SMWC's record moved to 20-11 (13-4 RSC) on the season while Rio Grande (Ohio) is now 20-12 (12-8 RSC).
In the first game, Rio Grande took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Lyric Krause and the Pomeroys responded in the bottom half of the frame with a single which scored by Jaselyn Conn and Jasmine Kinzer to go ahead 2-1. Rio Grande would knot the score at 2 in the fifth but SMWC responded in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jaleigh Crawford singled to score Abbi Henderson to retake a 3-2 advantage. RIo Grande pushed one across in the top of the seventh to tie the contest at 3. Krause came up with the big hit in the bottom of the eighth inning – a double – which scored Henderson for the 4-3 walkoff victory.
Krause was 2-of-4 at the plate with three RBI. Marin Jacobs earned the victory by tossing eight innings allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out two.
In the second game of the day, Rio Grande got off to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning before The Woods did their damage in the fourth. Conn would double to score Henderson to knot the contest at 1. Krause then recorded her fourth RBI of the day on a single which scored Conn to push SMWC ahead 2-1. Naveah Pender would record a RBI single to drive home Krause and the Pomeroys led 3-1. Kinzer singled to score Hannigan and then Henderson singled to score Makalya Jackman and Pender for the 6-1 cushion. Rio Grande hit a pair of home runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 6-4.
Crawford was 3-of-3 at the plate while Henderson posted a 2-for-3 tally with a run scored and a RBI. Kinzer drove in a pair of runs.
Summer Rocha went 4.1 innings in the circle with five hits allowed and two strikeouts before Emily Fitzwater tossed the 2.2 innings allowing just two hits and recording a strikeout.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods returns to action on Friday, April 12 when they host Midway (Ky.) for a RSC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. (ET) at the SMWC Softball Field.
