The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Sprint Football team will open their 2024 campaign on Saturday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. (ET) at home against Midway (Ky.). The game will be held at Jay Barrett Field on the campus of West Vigo High School right here in Vigo County.

The game will be broadcast live on the Indiana Sports Network (free webstream) as well as WNDI 95.3 FM on the radio with the legendary John Montgomery on the call.

SMWC begins its third season of competing in sprint football. The Pomeroys are 13-3 all-time in the sport -- all under the direction of third-year head coach Blaine Powell. In the previous two seasons, SMWC is 2-0 in season openers and this will be the first time in the history of the program that the Pomeroys have opened a campaign on their home field. In 2022, the Pomeroys won their first-ever sprint football game at Calumet College of St. Joseph by virtue of a 34-28 overtime victory and followed that up with a 28-10 win at CCSJ in the opener in 2023.

The Pomeroys won the 2022 Midwest Sprint Football League Championship with a 23-7 win at CCSJ in the league's championship game which was played in Whiting, Ind. In 2023, SMWC reached the MSFL Championship Game but fell to CCSJ in that game at Jay Barrett Field to finish as league runner-up. It was the first college football playoff contest to be held in Vigo County since 1984. In 2024, the Pomeroys were named the MSFL Preseason favorite. Midway, under the direction of first-year head coach Elbert Kern was picked sixth.

The only previous meeting between the Pomeroys and Eagles at home came on October 1, 2022 when SMWC earned a 48-22 victory in the second-ever home contest in the history of the program. These two teams met last season in the regular season finale on November 4, 2023 with the Pomeroys winning 43-14 in Frankfort, Ky. Derron Hazzard opened the scoring with a rushing touchdown and Jeremiah Tosky threw for three touchdowns in victory. All-time, SMWC is 2-0 against Midway including a perfect 1-0 mark at home.

Saturday's meeting will be the third home opener for the Pomeroys since launching the program and carry a perfect 2-0 record into the contest. SMWC defeated Quincy 21-7 in 2022 in the program's first ever home contest and downed Fontbonne in the home opener in 2023. All-time, the Pomeroys are 5-3 inside the friendly confines of Jay Barrett Field.

Junior quarterback Jeremiah Tosky (El Paso, TX/Andress) was named the 2023 MSFL Offensive MVP after leading the league in passing yards with 1,890. Tosky also tallied 301 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns, 17 passing touchdowns, and finished the season with a 56.38% completion rate.
