The Pomeroys recorded an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter to take a 7-3 lead after the Eagles had just posted a field goal and led for just a few seconds. After Midway would score on a long scoring strike, Â
Claijuan Cash received a 79-yard pass from
Jeremiah Tosky to push the Pomeroys ahead 13-10. Midway scored on a punt return for a touchdown with just over four minutes remaining in the first half to push them ahead 17-13 and SMWC could not reach pay dirt before time expired on their final drive before the half.
Brandon Washington began a string of 28 unanswered points for SMWC with a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown for the the 20-17 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
Derron Hazzard plunged in from four yards out on the next SMWC drive to take a 27-17 lead -- capping a drive that lasted five plays and covered 60 yards.
Austin Petrillo posted the second pick-six of the third quarter for the Pomeroys with a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:41 left on the clock to stretch the SMWC lead out to 34-17.
Owen Huff caught the second touchdown pass of the day from Tosky -- this one an eight-yarder with 6:36 left in the game to make it 41-17. Midway made the decision late in the game to punt instead of try to convert a fourth down and were able to pin the Pomeroys deep inside the two-yard line. In the shotgun, Tosky was caught behind the goal line as the Eagles scored their only points on the second half on a safety. SMWC would get the ball back and were able to use the run game to expire the clock and preserve the 41-19 victory.
Tosky finished the contest 17-of-29 passing for 267 yards through the air with two touchdowns against one interception.
Keandre Jones posted 32 rushing yards with Hazzard tallied 28 and a score. Cash was the leading receiver with one catch for the 79-yard touchdown reception while
Marques Reese posted five receptions for 70 yards.
Washington led the way defensively with 13 total tackles plus the 21-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Pomeroys hit the road for a contest at Quincy University on Saturday, September 21 at 3 p.m. (CT). The Hawks are 0-1 on the season after falling 27-21 to Bellarmine on on opening day in Louisville, Ky.
