SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball set a new school record by improving to a perfect 16-0 on the season with a pair of 3-0 sweeps against visiting Kentucky State on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 14) at the Knoerle Center.
The Pomeroys swept the first match by scores of 25-12. 25-10 and 25-22.
Karla Melendez led the way with eight kills while
Masa Pesic was credited with seven. Leishmarie Virrela was on fire from the serving line as she posted an impressive four service aces while
Jocelyn Chavez tallied three.
Ariana Cruz tallied nine assists while Chavez led the way with 10 digs.
In the second match of the doubleheader, the Pomeroys earned the sweep by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-19. In the second match,
Tori Schopmeyer paced the Pomeroys with eight kills while
Vivien Reese posted four.
Aden Britt tallied 14 set assists as well as a pair of service aces. Virrela led the way with 13 digs.
The Pomeroys are 16-0 for the first time in school history. The previous best came in the 2022 campaign when they started the season 14-0.Â
SMWC will open River States Conference play on Tuesday, September 17 when they travel to nationally-ranked IU-Kokomo for a 7 p.m. (ET) match.Â
