KOKOMO, Ind. -- In what was billed pre-game as the River States Conference Game Of The Week, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team traveled to IU-Kokomo looking to take down the #10 nationally-ranked Cougars and came tantalizingly close before falling 3-1 on Tuesday night (Sept. 17). IU-Kokomo was victorious by set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-15.
The Pomeroys see their school-record 16 match winning streak to open the season come to a close at 16-1 (0-1 RSC) while IU-Kokomo improves to 12-4 (1-0 RSC).
Karla Melendez led the way with 10 kills while
Tori Schopmeyer and
Alex Hernandez added eight each.
Ariana Cruz was credited with 15 set assists in the match.
Jocelyn Chavez led the with 18 digs while Cruz pitched in with 15. Hernandez and Isabell Hansen tallied four total blocks each.
As a team, SMWC recorded a total of 10 total blocks and eight services aces in the contest. Leishmarie Virrela led the way with three service aces in the match while
Masa Pesic and
Grace Geisler tallied two each.Â
In the winning second set, the Pomeroys were able to control the tempo from the get go and kept the Cougars at arms length. SMWC led midway through the third set and looked poised to take control of the match, but the nationally-ranked Cougars were able to battle back in the end before taking control and winning by five points.
The Pomeroys will travel to IU-East on Saturday, September 21 for a 2 p.m. (ET) River States Conference matchup in Richmond, Ind.
