The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Sprint Football team will continue their 2024 campaign on Saturday, September 21 at 3:00 p.m. (CT) on the road against Quincy (Ill.). The game is slated to be held at Quincy Stadium in Quincy, Ill.
The game will be broadcast live on the QUHawks.com as well as WNDI 95.3 FM on the radio with the legendary John Montgomery on the call.
SMWC continues its third season of competing in sprint football. The Pomeroys are 14-3 all-time in the sport -- all under the direction of third-year head coach
Blaine Powell. The Pomeroys improved to 3-0 in season openers with a 41-19 victory last week over Midway. It marked the first time in program history that the Pomeroys opened a campaign on their home field. SMWC enters the Quincy contest with a perfect 8-0 record all-time away from home.
The Pomeroys are 3-0 all-time against Quincy -- with all three previous meetings occurring at home. SMWC defeated the Hawks 23-13 last November in the MSFL Semifinals.
The Pomeroys won the 2022 Midwest Sprint Football League Championship with a 23-7 win at CCSJ in the league's championship game which was played in Whiting, Ind. In 2023, SMWC reached the MSFL Championship Game but fell to CCSJ in that game at Jay Barrett Field to finish as league runner-up. It was the first college football playoff contest to be held in Vigo County since 1984. In 2024, the Pomeroys were named the MSFL Preseason favorite. Quincy, under the direction of third-year head coach Conner McLaughlin enters the game with an 0-1 record after falling 27-21 in their season opener at Bellarmine.
Last Saturday's meeting was the third home opener for the Pomeroys since launching the program and are now 3-0 in home lidlifters. SMWC defeated Quincy 21-7 in 2022 in the program's first ever home contest and downed Fontbonne in the home opener in 2023. All-time, the Pomeroys are 6-3 inside the friendly confines of Jay Barrett Field.
Marques Reese is the reigning MSFL Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown for the Pomeroys first points of the season. Reese also caught seven passes for 85 yards in the contest.
Junior quarterback
Jeremiah Tosky (El Paso, TX/Andress) completed 18-of-28 passes in the contest for 276 yards with two touchdowns. The Pomeroys lead the MSFL with a 41.0 points per game average.
The Pomeroy defense did not allow a single point in the second half of the 41-19 season opening win over Midway. Only a surrendered safety in the fourth quarter kept SMWC from recording a full second half shutout. SMWC scored 28 unanswered points to turn a slight deficit into a commanding second half advantage.
On defense,
Brandon Washington began a string of 28 unanswered points for SMWC with a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown for the the 20-17 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
Derron Hazzard plunged in from four yards out on the next SMWC drive to take a 27-17 lead -- capping a drive that lasted five plays and covered 60 yards.
The Pomeroys will enjoy their scheduled bye week on September 28 before hosting the annual Homecoming contest on Saturday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m. (ET) against Oakland City.
