SMWC Volleyball Ties School Record With 14th Victory To Open Season

MARSHALL, Texas -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team earned two more victories to close out play at the Wiley University Showdown on Saturday morning (Sept. 7). Sweeps were in the cards for the Pomeroys against both John Melvin University and Paul Quinn College. With the two victories, SMWC has now 14 matches to begin the season which ties the school record which was set back in the 2022-23 campaign.

The Pomeroys are now 14-0 on the season and will put their streak on the line on Saturday, September 14 for a pair of matches against Kentucky State beginning at 11 a.m. (ET) inside the Knoerle Center.

In the first match -- a 3-0 victory over John Melvin University -- the Pomeroys won the sets in convincing fashion by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-14Ti. 

Grace Giesler paced the squad with 11 kills in the contest while Tori Schopmeyer added seven. Leishmarie Virrela added a pair of service aces while Jocelyn Chavez and Holly Linville each recorded one. Linville also posted three total blocks in the win.

Lillian Breaux posted 26 set assists in the win while Geisler led the charge in digs with 10.

For the match, the Pomeroys recorded a .304 attack percentage paced by a .370 effort in the opening set. The Woods raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opener and then scored four of the final five points to win 25-10. Isabel Hansen claimed the set winner for the Pomeroys.

In the second set, it was back-and-forth early before the Pomeroys strung together five points in a row to open a cushion at 10-4. Evelyn Morales capped a set-ending four point run with a kill to give the Pomeroys a 25-13 victory. Facing a 6-4 deficit in the deciding set, the Pomeroys battled back with three points in a row and after give up  one found themselves tied at 7. Also tied at 12, SMWC scored four in a row to take control and finished out the match by scoring the final seven -- capped by a kill from Breaux for the 25-14 set win and the 3-0 sweep.

On short rest, SMWC swept Paul Quinn College later in the morning by scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-17. 

Alex Hernandez recorded 13 kills while Karla Melendez added 10. Airana Cruz tallied 18 set assists while Jocelyn Chavez posted 17 digs. The Pomeroys posted a .351 attack percentag in the third set.

The Woods scored the first seven points of the match and cruised to a 25-11 victory in the opening set. In the second set, the Pomeroys scored 12 of the final 14 points to win 25-16 as Hansen closed it out with a kill.

In the third set, the Pomeroys led 18-14 before opening up the scoreboard with four points in a row capped by a Melendez kill for the 22-14 advantage. Alex Hernandez recorded a kill and SMWC benefitted from a PQC attack error to wrap up the record tying victory.
