KOKOMO, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team saw their school record 14-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday evening (Jan. 14) as they fell 91-84 at IU-Kokomo in the River States Conference Game of the Week.
SMWC falls to 14-3 on the season and 4-1 in River States Conference play while the Cougars improved to 13-4, 4-1 RSC and the two teams are now tied atop the East Division standings. These two teams will meet again on February 22 when the Pomeroys host on Senior Day at 1 pm (ET).
Next up for SMWC is a home contest against Midway (Ky.) on Saturday, January 18 at 1 pm (ET) inside the Knoerle Center.
Greg Jenkins led the way with 27 points while
Malachi Pearson chipped in with 16.
Taeron Hogg added 13 while
Greg Johnson tallied 11 and
Caleb Iheukwu owned 10. The Pomeroys hit on nine shots from distance in the game including a game-high three from Pearson. Pearson also led the way with seven rebounds.
Three consecutive baskets from Iheukwu answered a bucket from IU-Kokomo on their opening possession to stake the Pomeroys to a 6-2 advantage. Hogg's jumper with 12:54 left before the break stretched the lead out to 14-8 but the Cougars countered with five in a row to get within a point.
Taray Howell connected on 3-point range before the Cougars scored five in a row to go back ahead. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jenkins and Pearson stretched the cushion back out to 25-20.
IU-Kokomo retook the lead on a 6-0 spurt but Howell drained another 3-pointer as the clock ticked towards the seven minute mark to push the Pomeroys back ahead. But IU-Kokomo would score 17 of the next 20 points and stretched their lead out to double digits and owned a 46-35 edge at the break.
Trailing by 10 early in the second half, the Pomeroys made their run — a 9-0 spurt capped by a Pearson lay-up just over five minutes after halftime and it was 54-53. With 14:05 left in the game, Pearson drained a 3-pointer to extend the run to 12 in a row and give the Pomeroys a narrow 56-54 cushion. '
The Cougars would build their lead back out to double digits in the waning moments but the Pomeroys scored the final four points of the game but came up on the short end of the 91-84 score.
