Kennedy Trigg had two goals and an assist
in the first half Saturday.Â
Earlier this week, SMWC women's soccer coach Ron Kiernicki said his program has traded punches with Brescia in recent years, with both teams coming out on top in the variety of meetings in the series.
On Saturday, the visiting Bearcats landed the first blow with a goal in the third minute by Payton Willis, but the Pomeroys' counter punch put Brescia in a daze.
Kennedy Trigg (Greencastle, Ind./Greencastle) delivered a 40-yard high-arcing shot into the net in the 16
th-minute and the Pomeroys added two more goals in the next three minutes.
In the 19
th minute, Trigg set up
Kaylee Lowe (Brazil, Ind./Northview) for Lowe's third goal of the season, and just 55 seconds later,
Sierra Mullins (Vincennes, Ind./Vincennes Lincoln) assisted
Raelee Everhart (Brazil, Ind./Northview) to put the Pomeroys ahead 3-1.
Mullins created her own opportunity in the 23
rd minute for team-best fifth goal of the season and a 4-1 lead.
Trigg scored the final goal of the first half on a penalty kick. The Pomeroys were shut out in the second half but held on for a 5-4 victory to improve to 1-2-2 in River States Conference play.
"That (first) one was really exciting and a motivator that led to our other goals. I didn't think that was going in. Coach gave us the scouting report to take the long shots and that's what I did," Trigg said.
The Pomeroys had some challenges in the second half.
Kaylee Thaler, who's been battling some injuries, was replaced by freshman
Lauren Rindone to start the second half and Brescia came out with a more physical approach in the second half in order to generate some offense.
In the 54
th minute, Geneva Hann scored and Willis scored again in the 66
th minute followed quickly by Isabella McChesny in the 67
th minute.
Thaler returned to the match and SMWC fought off Brescia's solid second-half effort.
SMWC (2-4-3, 1-2-2) and Brescia (3-6-1, 0-3-1) each had eight shots on goal.
"You saw the first half with all our feet back. Our three forward system was working fantastically," Kiernicki said. "All week long we worked on all three dimensions. We lost the momentum. We gave our young goalkeeper an opportunity. Rindone's played very well for us. She'll learn and grow from this," Kiernicki said. "We've been training extremely hard to get this win and we have to take this into the next game moving forward." Â
The Pomeroys were close to full strength for the first time since the opening match due to various injuries or illnesses.
"The mood's way up, it was so good to have a great win with everyone back," Trigg said. "We just had to keep our heads. We were very passionate about the match."
