Box Score Saint Mary-of-the-Woods senior Hannah Zuege pounded out 25 kills to help lift the Pomeroys to win No. 25 this season Friday night against Midway by scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12.
The Pomeroys (25-6, 11-6 River States Conference) have a shot to catch the Eagles for fourth place in the final RSC standings going into next week's conference tournament if they can win Saturday against Alice Lloyd combined with a Midway loss to IU Kokomo.
SMWC couldn't hold a late lead in the fourth set and then had to rally from a 10-6 deficit in the decisive fifth set. Zuege had four kills and two clutch service aces as the Pomeroys surged to the victory.
'We played against them earlier in the season and didn't show up the way we wanted to. There was a lot of passion in tonight's game and that paid off. We played with confidence. Even though the scores were tight, we didn't have a doubt that we were going to win this game," said Zuege, who also had 18 digs and 3 aces. Â
The Pomeroys were sharp from the beginning Friday night but lost the opening set 22-25 before bouncing back strong in the second.
Zuege had five kills in the second set as the Pomeroys held on for a 25-19 win and she carried that momentum into the third with six more kills.
The Pomeroys also got strong contributions from Kira Gonzales, who had 10 kills and 4.5 blocks, and Shirley Marina added eight kills and six digs. Jade Llamas had 15 assists and 10 digs.
Jazilyn Davis saw her first action of the season at setter, leading the team with 19 assists to go with three blocks.
"This team really played as a full unit. Everyone did their role and then some. We competed. We made them work and [Midway] made us work. It was a lot of fun to watch," coach Ashley Harris said.
Jocelyn Chavez moved within 30 of the single-season digs record with her match-high 30 digs.
The Pomeroys will celebrate graduating seniors Katelyn Bucy and Sydni Bailey on Saturday against Alice Lloyd.
