Box Score OWENSBORO, KY. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods put four players in double figures Tuesday night and held host Brescia to 30.8 percent shooting on the night to pick up a dominant 76-51 victory.
The Pomeroys (9-17, 4-13 River States Conference) got to work at the defensive end early, holding the Bearcats scoreless for 3 minutes, 54 seconds to pull even at 7-7 with 14:25 to go in the first half. The Pomeroys' offense went cold, however, and Brescia pulled ahead 19-12 by the 9:12 mark.
SMWC went on a 14-0 run that included four points apiece from
Keith Germain and
J.R. Lumsden and 3-pointers from
Tarik Dixon and
Elkin Ramirez.
The Pomeroys maintained that momentum for the remainder of the game. Dixon hit another 3-pointer for a 34-28 lead with 1:47 to go before halftime.
Ramirez, who finished with a team-high 17 points, hit another 3-pointer 2 ½ minutes into the second half for a 40-31 lead. Germain, who had 14 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals, dunked for a 44-33 Pomeroys' lead with 15:18 to go.
The teams traded buckets much of the next seven minutes. But SMWC began to pull away.
Dixon set up
Davin Miller for an alley-oop slam with 7:06 remaining for a 57-45 lead.
Braden Edington followed with a layup. Germain finished off a dunk for a 61-45 lead and J.R. Lunsden, who had 14 points, converted a layup for a 65-47 lead. SMWC's defense held Brescia without a point over 3:41.
The Pomeroys put at least four players in double figures for just the fifth time this season and second time in River States Conference play. Miller also chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.
Dixon had 15 points and five assists. The Pomeroys' 49.2 percent shooting was its third best performance in RSC play. The Pomeroys were an efficient 8 of 13 from 3-point range.
"We have been playing soiled defensively all along, but this game the offense clicked," coach Mike Hunter said. "There was a lot of energy for (the Bearcats') Senior Night and we came out and exceeded it."
