Pomeroys Race To Decisive Victory Over Judson In Home Opener

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team raced out to an early lead against visiting Judson during the home opener for the season inside Knoerle Center en route to a decisive 102-67 non-conference victory.

It was the sixth win in a row for the Pomeroys who improved to 6-2 on the season while Judson fell to 1-2. SMWC will travel to Brescia (Ky.) for its River States Conference opener on Tuesday, November 26. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm (CT).

Shon Tupuola led the way with a double-double as he recorded 21 points and 16 rebounds. He was 7-of-10 from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Taeron Hogg was the team's leading scorer with 23 points on a 9-of-14 shooting effort including a perfect 5-of-5 mark from 3-point range. Also in double figures was Taray Howell with 17 points as he hit four 3-pointers wjile Greg Jenkins added 11 and Greg Johnson owned 12. Jenkins also owned a double-double with 11 assists to go with his 13 points.

The Pomeroys dominated the glass by a 48-33 margin including 14 offensive rebounds which turned into 13 second-chance points. The defense forced 15 turnovers and scored 30 points off those. SMWC recorded 10 steals in the contest.

DaMeriz Merriweather tallied seven points in seven minutes of play in the second half.

Tupuola and Jenkins each scored on the opening possessions en route to a 13-2 lead. A tip-in from Jared Bonds as the clock ticked under the nine minute mark gave the Pomeroys a 28-8 advantage. Hogg's turnaround jumper with 1:03 to go before the break pushed the lead out to 53-18.

A 3-pointer from Howell with just over a minute remaining gave the Pomeroys 100 points en route to victory.
