SMWC Basketball Wins Mount Vernon Nazarene Homecoming Classic

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- The SMWC men's basketball team picked up a pair of victories this weekend to win the Mount Vernon Nazarene Homecoming Classic. On Saturday (Nov. 9) the Pomeroys tallied a dominating 80-57 win over the hosts to earn the Classic Championship.

SMWC improved to 2-2 on the season while MVNU fell to 2-1. The Pomeroys will travel to Simmons College of Kentucky on Tuesday, November 12 for a 7 pm (ET) tipoff before heading to the Moody Bible College Classic on November 15 & 16.

For the second consecutive game, Greg Jenkins led the way -- this time with a double-double -- as he posted 23 points and 10 assists in the win. He also tallied five assists. The Pomeroys had five players in double figures as Karson Jenkins added 14 points on the strength of a 5-of-11 shooting performance. Another double-double for Shon Tupuola as he posted 12 points and 12 rebounds as he was 6-of-10 from the field. Malachi Pearson added 12 points as well as he was 5-of-7 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and Greg Johnson hit a pair of trifectas to score 10 points.

SMWC hit 50 percent of their shots from the field (31-of-62) and won the rebounding margin by a 36-33 margin. 10 offensive rebounds netted a total of 17 second chance points.

Consecutive scores for the Pomeroys late in the first half flipped an early deficit to a 27-22 lead with just over six minutes left before the half. A 3-pointer by Taeron Hogg gave SMWC its first double digit lead with 2:41 remaining before leading 39-27 at the half. Tupuola posted a dunk to cap an 8-0 run to start the second half and the Pomeroys led 47-27 with 18:20 remaining.

MVNU would get as close as 13 points down the stretch but SMWC hit their free throws down the stretch to win the contest 80-57.
