Pomeroys Win 14th Straight To Improve To 4-0 In League Play

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team remaining hot with a 79-67 victory on the road over Oakland City in River States Conference play to win their 14th consecutive game and remain undefeated in league play.

SMWC is now 14-2 on the season and 4-0 inside the River States Conference. The Pomeroys will travel to IU-Kokomo on Tuesday, January 14 for a 5:30 pm (ET) tipoff.

Greg Jenkins had 23 points and six steals with five rebounds in the win — plus five assists. Taray Howell tallied 17 points while DaMeriz Merriweather recorded 15 rebounds off the bench. The Pomeroys recorded 13 steals and scored 20 points off the Mighty Oaks turnovers.

The Pomeroys used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to take a 20-9 lead with 8:44 left before the half on a lay-up from Taeron Hogg. A 3-pointer from Malachi Pearson with just over seven minutes ahead of the break stretched the advantage to 23-11. Howell's jumper with just over a minute left before the break established a double digit advantage but SMWC would go into the half with a 37-28 lead,

The Mighty Oaks would draw within four points early in the second half before Howell hit a pair of free throws to push the lead out to 45-39. Greg Johnson put together an 8-0 run capped with 11:44 remaining for the 53-41 lead. Pearson answered an Oakland City bucket with a trifecta as the clock ticked under nine minutes to go to begin an 8-0 run which gave SMWC an 18-point advantage.

A steal and fast break dunk with 7:57 to go gave the Pomeroys a 65-46 cushion. A conventional 3-point play by Howell at the 5:45 mark gave SMWC a 71-48 lead — its largest of the game.
