SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Shon Tupuola of the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team has been named the River States Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. Tupuola earned the honor after a standout performance in the Pomeroys' two road wins over West Virginia Tech and Alice Lloyd.
Tupuola averaged 9.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, contributing crucial defensive efforts with five total blocks on the week. He posted a season-high 12 defensive rebounds in the win over West Virginia Tech on January 23, while also adding three blocks, including two on back-to-back possessions to begin the second half. The senior forward's defensive presence was felt throughout both contests, as he helped SMWC maintain their dominance on the glass and on the defensive end.
In the Pomeroys' 76-68 victory over West Virginia Tech, Tupuola registered 13 points, 18 rebounds, and two blocks, shooting 83.3% from the field. He followed that performance with a solid 5-point, 5-rebound effort in a 84-80 win at Alice Lloyd on January 25, with three more blocks and solid defensive rebounding.
Tupuola is a key part of SMWC's success this season, as the Pomeroys are currently 17-3 overall and lead the River States Conference with a 7-1 mark in league play.
The Pomeroys will return to action at home on Thursday, January 30, when they host Shawnee State at the Knoerle Center. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
