SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's basketball team captured their 12
th victory in a row — this one over visiting IU-Southeast — on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 4) inside the Knoerle Center by the score of 69-58. The winning streak is a new school record topping the 11 in a row won last season by the Pomeroys.
SMWC now stands at 12-2 on the season including a perfect 2-0 mark in River States Conference play with IU-Southeast dropped to 4-7 on the campaign. The Pomeroys are scheduled to take on IU-Columbus inside the Knoerle Center at 5:30 pm (ET) on Tuesday, January 7. Of course, officials from both schools will monitor the incoming winter weather prior to the contest.
Greg Jenkins led the way for the Pomeroys with 23 points and seven rebounds while
Shon Tupuola continued his strong campaign with another double-double by posting 15 points and 18 rebounds.
Also in double figures scoring was
Greg Johnson wih 12 points and
Taeron Hogg added 10. SMWC held a 55-37 edge on the class and scored 13 second chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.
SMWC hit 18-of-54 shots (33.3 percent) in the game but countered by holding IU-Southeast to just 32.8 percent shooting. Johnson was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line including a parade to the charity stripe in the final moments to secure the victory.
An early 7-0 run stretched the Pomeroy advantage out to 12-4 on a Hogg 3-point field goal. After a Tupuola free throw with 6:24 capped a 10-0 run SMWC held a 26-10 lead. Tupuola's dunk with 26 seconds left in the first half staked SMWC to a 39-20 lead which they would take into the half.
Tupuola would connected on a lay-up with 16:24 left in the game to stretch the lead out to 46-23. IU-Southeast climbed back into it and got within 54-45 with just over three minutes remaining. They would get as close as six points down twice in the final minute but the Pomeroys hit their final four free throws — by Johnson — to earn the 69-58 victory.
