SMWC Extends Their School Record Winning Streak To 13 Games With Win Over IU-Columbus

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- Mother Nature may have delayed this game by a day, but the Pomeroys did not delay by racing out to an early lead they would never lose in a 96-57 home court victory over River States Conference foe IU-Columbus on Wednesday evening (Jan. 8) inside the Knoerle Center.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College improved to 13-2 on the season and ran out to their school record winning streak to 13 games in the nearly 40 point victory. The Pomeroys will now go on the road for each of their next two conference contests beginning with a Saturday, January 11 tilt at Oakland City which is slated for a 1 pm (CT) tipoff in Southern Indiana.

Greg Jenkins led the way for the Pomeroys with 19 points as he hit 8-of-12 shots from the field but off the bench was DaMeriz Merriweather who posted a double-double with 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the win. The Pomeroys hit 47.5 percent of their shots (38-of-80) and connected on a total of 10 3-point field goals. Taeron Hogg and Taray Howell owned three each while Greg Johnson connected twice from distance.

Also in double figures scoring were Howell who scored 17 points and Hogg who tallied 15 while Johnson owend 10 and Caleb Iheukwu posted 11. The boards were dominated by SMWC by a 52-27 margin and they converted 19 offensive rebounds in an eye-popping 29 second-chance points. They forced 13 IU-Columbus turnovers and converted them into 23 points.

SMWC scored the game's first five points — all from Jenkins. A 13-0 SMWC run opened the game up early in the first half as Blake Welle capped it with a lay-up for the 20-6 advantage. A Jenkins jumper with 9:04 remaining before the break stretched the cushion out to 31-8. SMWC led 45-20 at the break.

A 3-pointer from Howell with 6:02 remaining stretched the lead out to 85-50. A pair of Jesse Burdick free throws with just over a minute to go stretched the lead out to 41 points before finally settling on a 96-57 decision in favor of the Pomeroys.
