Box Score SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team defeated Brescia University on Tuesday in an overtime thriller.
The Pomeroys defeated the Bearcats 5-4 in overtime at the SMWC Soccer Field. The Pomeroys battled for 99 minutes and 49 seconds on Tuesday to take home their first win in the month of October after drawing in a double overtime match with Oakland City on Saturday.
Junior Kylee White took control in the first 12 minutes of play with two goals. The first goal came just 1:30 into the match when senior Sarah Robinson played a ball into the box for White, who found the back of the net. White's second goal came at the 12:12 mark. This time fellow junior Amanda Loebker recorded the assist.
The Bearcats answered SMWC with two goals of their own in the 22nd and 28th minutes. With the score knotted up at 2-2, the Pomeroys headed into the break having recorded six shots compared to the Bearcats eight.
In the second half, Loebker got the scoring started in the 53rd minute when she beat BU's keeper in the box and netted her seventh goal of the season. Brescia then answered quickly in the following minute with a goal of their own to keep things tangled up at three.
With 36 minutes left to play, both sides continued to go back and forth. At the 62:12 mark, Brescia tallied its fourth and final goal of the afternoon. SMWC went on to answer in the 77th minute off of a goal by Robinson. With time winding down in regulation, both sides made plays in efforts to net the game-winner, however, both sides came up short.
With 90 minutes proving to not be enough time, SMWC and BU headed into overtime. Overtime was much like the previous 90 minutes, in that both sides played physically and battled hard to maintain momentum. Just when it looked like the match would be heading into a second overtime, sophomore Morgan Samuelson tallied the match winning goal with just 11 ticks left on the clock.
Nine different Pomeroys recorded a shot on Tuesday, with White and Robinson leading the way with four each. Sophomore Georgie Macy played the first 45 minutes in goal before freshman Shannon Sonderman came in for the final 54:49.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on October 19, when they host Saint Catharine College in a 1 p.m. start.
