SMWC Falls to Shawnee State on Day 2 of CCSJ Tournament

Box Score

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) soccer team fell on day two of the Calumet College of St. Joseph Tournament to Shawnee State, 3-2.

The Pomeroys found themselves in an early hole as they fell behind 3-0 heading into halftime. Shawnee State first got on the board at the 7:32 mark and then again at 10:29 and 21:46. After the quick offensive attack by Shawnee State, the Pomeroys settled in defensively and did not allow another goal.

The match became much more physical in the second half with two yellow cards being issued, one to each side. Freshman Shannon Sonderman was the first to be issued a yellow at 51:38. She was followed by Shawnee State's Schuyler Jones at 80:42.

To get the offense going, junior Amanda Loebker tallied her first goal of the season at the 51:08 mark to move the score to 3-1. The Pomeroys weren't done there, as after the second yellow card Loebker again scored another goal to cut the deficit to only one with six minutes to play. However, the Pomeroys would not be able to get an equalizer to extend play, thus moving SMWC to 0-2 on the young season.

At the conclusion of the tournament, it was announced that Loebker had been named to the all-tournament team. Loebker finished the two-day tournament with two goals.

The Pomeroys will now head back to SMWC and regroup as they prepare for their home opener vs. Andrews University on September 7. Stay tuned to smwc.edu/athletics for all of your SMWC soccer news and information.
