Box Score 3 CANTON, N.Y. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods college volleyball team had a very successful second day at the USCAA Volleyball National Tournament.
The Pomeroys started off the day in pool play by defeating Alfred State, 2-1 (20-25, 25-19, 15-13), and Penn State Brandywine, 2-0 (25-15, 25-17). At the conclusion of pool play, the Pomeroys had a pool play record of 3-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Florida College.
SMWC's 3-1 record in pool play gave the Pomeroys the No. 2 spot in the tournament. The Pomeroys then faced SUNY Canton in what turned into a five set thriller that ended with SMWC keeping their hunt for a national title alive.
The Pomeroys won the first set 25-18, but then dropped the second set 25-17. The third set saw the Pomeroys trail most of the way before snatching the 25-23 victory. SUNY Canton then took the fourth set 25-14. The final set went SMWC's way as the Pomeroys claimed a 15-11 victory and advanced to the semifinals of the USCAA Volleyball National Tournament.
Freshman McKenzi Kumpf led the Pomeroys in kills with 12, while junior Brylie Riddell recorded 10 kills. Both Kumpf and Riddell went for a double-double as they each recorded 13 digs. Sophomore Madeline Howes went for a team-high 20 digs. Freshman Autum Loughead notched seven block assists and freshman Mary Alvanos recorded 34 assist and 12 digs to also record a double-double.
The Pomeroys will now face Alfred State tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. The match will feature LIVE stats and video.
