Pomeroys Split on Homecoming

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods volleyball team split on the day as they first fell to Oakland City 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 13-25, 24-26) before defeating Cincinnati Clermont 3-1 (24-26, 25-7, 25-17, 25-9).

In game one of the day against OCU, the Pomeroys were led by junior Brylie Riddell's 15 kills and freshman Autum Loughead's 10 kills. Three Pomeroys recorded double-digit digs with sophomore Madeline Howes recording a team-high 24, Riddell with 13 and freshman Mary Alvanos recording 12 to go with her 41 assists. 

Freshman Gabriella Slagle notched seven block assists and one solo block to go with her eight kills. Freshman Monica Mack record five block assists as did Loughead.

The Pomeroys took the second set 25-14 after falling in the first set 25-21. The third set got away from the Pomeroys at 25-13, and the fourth set was a heartbreaking 26-24 defeat. The Pomeroys rallied to knot the match at 24, but then a kill by OCU and an error by Riddell ended SMWC's first match of the day.

The Pomeroys moved to 2-0 on the year when competing against Cincinnati Clermont as they downed the Cougars, 3-1. The Pomeroys dropped a close first set, 26-24, but then rallied to take the next three sets in dominating fashion. The Pomeroys won set two 25-7 as they started off the set on a 16-0 run led by the serving of freshman McKenzi Kumpf. SMWC took the third set 25-17 and then finished the Cougars off in set four 25-9 after jumping out to a 21-7 lead.

Riddell again led SMWC's attack with 14 kills, while junior Jessica Coombs added eight kills. Four Pomeroys notched double-digit digs as Howes recorded 17, Coombs 12, Riddell 11 and Kumpf 10. Slagle recorded five block assists, while Loughead and Riddell each record four. Howes turned in an impressive six aces as the Pomeroys moved to 5-4 on the year and 2-0 against USCAA opponents. 

The Pomeroys will be back in action on September 25 and 26, when they head to Berea College to take part in the USCAA North South Battlefield Classic.
