Box Score 2 SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) volleyball team improved to 4-0 on Saturday after defeating both Brescia and Purdue Calumet, 3-1.
The Pomeroys started off the day by losing their first set to Brescia 25-20. The Pomeroys then bounced back to take the next three sets, 26-24, 25-18, and 25-21. Juniors Brylie Riddell and Jessica Coombs led the attack with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Riddell also added five service aces. Coombs made it a double-double in game one as she added 15 digs to go with her 11 kills. Sophomore Madeline Howes recorded 23 digs, while freshman Mary Alvanos recorded 39 digs. Freshmen Gabriella Slagle and Autum Loughead each recorded six block assists while Monica Mack recorded five block assists.
The Pomeroys had a battle in their second set with Brescia taking the 26-24 victory, which was sealed by back-to-back attacking errors by Brescia. The Pomeroys jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the third set before Brescia came back and pulled within three points, 20-17. The Pomeroys' attack stayed strong though as Riddell capped set three with an ace. The fourth set was another tight one, knotted up at 15-15 before SWMC pulled ahead.
The Pomeroys then faced Purdue Calumet in the final match of the day. The Pomeroys downed the Peregrines 25-20, 14-25, 25-19, 25-23. Riddell again recorded 12 kills, while defensively Loughead recorded seven block assists and two solo blocks.
The Pomeroys jumped out 16-6 on Purdue Calumet and rode their early lead to a 25-20 victory in set one. The Pomeroys were tripped up in set two as Purdue Calumet answered with the 25-14 win. The final two sets were tight, but the Pomeroys rode the strong attack of Riddell and Coombs to victories in sets three and four.
The Pomeroys have started off on a roll by winning their first four matches in the program's history. Next up, they will greet cross-town foe Rose-Hulman at home in the Knoerle Center on September 9 at 7 p.m.
