Pflum, #PomeroyWSC Dominate in Victory Over Brescia

Box Score

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team dominated on Wednesday night at home. The Pomeroys defeated Brescia, 8-1, to earn their first win of the season. SMWC is now 1-4 on the year.

The scoring started early and continued throughout the night with sophomore Ashleigh Pflum tallying three of SMWC's eight goals. Pflum struck just 23 seconds into the match off of a pass from sophomore Haley Shuler. Freshman Ashley Jezik would then take a turn scoring in the seventh minute, as she powered through the Bearcats' keeper for the goal.

With the 2-0 lead, Pflum added SMWC's third goal in the 36th minute, and Jezik then followed in the 39th minute off of a ball from senior Cami Navarra. The duo of Pflum and Jezik gave the Pomeroys a halftime lead of 4-0.

The second half saw Jezik and Pflum take a back seat to Navarra and juniors Katia Orozco and Yadira Castellanos. Orozco scored in the 48th minute off of a deflected ball, and then Navarra turned around and scored in the 60th minute. Castellanos then added SMWC's seventh goal in the 76th minute. With SMWC holding a dominating, 7-0 lead, Brescia responded with a goal in the 79th minute to make it 7-1 in favor of SMWC. The Pomeroys responded, and it was fitting that the Pomeroy that scored the first goal scored the final goal of the night, as Pflum knocked in her third career goal in the 82nd minute.

Freshman Mannah Mace was new in goal today, logging her first college minutes and earning her first college win as a keeper. The Pomeroys' defense did make it easy for Mace, however, as Mace only had to defend two shots compared to the Brescia goalkeepers who had to defend 23 shots. The Pomeroys offense possessed the ball the majority of the match, and it showed in the box score and on the scoreboard, as SMWC walked off with their first victory of 2016 on Wednesday night.

The Pomeroys will be back in action on September 17 when they host Cincinnati Christian in a 3 p.m. start.
