Box Score 3 BEREA, Ky. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team went 2-1 on day two of the USCAA Battlefield Classic. With a bounce back performance after falling to Florida College on day one, the Pomeroys are now 3-12 on the year.
The Pomeroys started the day off by defeating Johnson & Wales in five sets. SMWC then followed that performance up by beating Carlow in four sets before falling to Florida National in three sets.
SMWC's match with Johnson & Wales saw sophomore Gabriella Slagle record 25 kills, while sophomore McKenzi Kumpf recorded 18 and sophomore Mary Alvanos recorded 49 assists. The Pomeroys fell in the first set 21-25, but then bounced back to claim the next two sets 26-24 and 25-16. Johnson & Wales didn't give in though as they came back and took set four, 25-23, to force a set five that SMWC went on to win 15-6.
The Pomeroys carried their momentum from their first match into match number two of the day against Carlow. SMWC jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking sets one and two, 25-20 and 25-16. Carlow then answered to take set three, 25-21, but it was too little too late as SMWC snatch set four 25-19 for their second victory of the day. Kumpf and Slagle again led SMWC's attack with 14 and 11 kills. Sophomore Monica Mack recorded seven block assists and sophomore Autum Loughead recorded 31 assists.
The Pomeroys went for the trifecta to end the day against Florida National, but were unable to knockoff one of the USCAA's top teams in the final match of the day. The Pomeroys fell, 3-0 (18-25, 18-25, 24-26) to finish the USCAA Battlefield Classic with a 2-2 record. Loughead led the Pomeroys in kills with nine, while she and Slagle recorded five block assists. Junior Madeline Howes led SMWC in digs in every match except for the final one, to record 54 digs on Saturday.
The Pomeroys will be back in action on September 28 when they head to Lincoln Christian for a 7 p.m. start. The Red Lions defeated SMWC earlier in the season in Hamilton Arena.
