Box Score SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind.- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) women's soccer team (1-2-0) earned their first win of the season this evening against Brescia University (0-1-0). Two unanswered goals, highlighted by Alexis Pflum's goal in the 84', gave the Pomeroys the lead late and their first win. They'll look to continue their success when they host Trine University on October 3rd.
How It Happened
1st Half: The Pomeroys came out a little sluggish, finding themselves on the defensive through most of the half. Scoring opportunities would appear few and far between as the ball stayed on the defensive half of the pitch. Brescia appeared much more motivated to control the ball, displaying impressive footwork and sharp ball movement. Brescia's Aubrey Jones would put the Bearcats ahead with a shot into the top of the box, just out of reach of keeper Corre Matherly in the 33'. SMWC couldn't find any scoring chances through the rest of the half and head into the break down 1-0.
2nd Half: SMWC found their energy coming out of halftime, finding second gear immediately. It was the opposite story of the 1st half as the Pomeroys would be the ones controlling the ball and creating opportunities. They would find pay dirt in the 58' when Kortney Buckley placed Lanee Andrew's corner kick into the bottom right corner of the goal for the equalizer. Alexis Pflum would later give the Pomeroys the lead with a shot from outside the box in the 84' and a 2-1 lead late in the match. SMWC would hold on in the final minutes for their first win of the season and spoil Brescia's season opener.
